Cynthia Voigt

Biography

Cynthia Voigt (born 1942) is an American novelist who taught English at a private school in Maryland's Eastern Shore for over a decade. The Chesapeake Bay landscape of Homecoming and the Tillerman cycle is drawn directly from her experience. She began writing the novel after seeing a group of children sitting in a parked car in a shopping center, waiting — and wondering what would happen if no one came back for them. The image generated the entire Tillerman cycle: seven novels following the four children and their extended family. Homecoming was a Newbery Honor Book in 1982; its sequel, Dicey's Song, won the Newbery Medal in 1983.
