Napoleon Hill was born in 1883 in a one-room cabin in Pound, Virginia, in the heart of Appalachia. His mother died when he was nine, and his father remarried a woman who, according to Hill, transformed his life by encouraging his ambitions and replacing the pistol he carried as a mountain boy with a typewriter. Hill's story of his stepmother's influence — seeing potential where others saw a troublemaker — became the biographical foundation for his principle of 'giving someone a fine reputation to live up to.' Hill's account of his twenty-year research project, commissioned by Andrew Carnegie, has been a source of controversy since the book's publication. While Hill certainly met Carnegie and many other successful Americans, the scope and systematic nature of his research has been questioned by biographers. What is not disputed is that Hill spent decades immersed in the study of success, interviewing businessmen, politicians, and inventors, and distilling their insights into the principles that would become Think and Grow Rich. Hill's personal life was marked by financial instability, multiple business failures, and personal tragedy — experiences that give his emphasis on persistence and resilience a biographical authenticity. He wrote Think and Grow Rich in his fifties, after decades of setbacks, making the book itself a demonstration of the principles it espouses. Hill died in 1970 at age eighty-seven, by which time his book had become one of the best-selling nonfiction titles in history.
