Character Analysis

Enormous, learning-disabled, and convinced he is his father's son in the worst possible sense. Max's self-assessment — stupid, dangerous, destined for nothing — is contradicted by every page he narrates. His journey from silence to storytelling is the novel's central arc. Max is not 'cured' by Kevin; he is revealed by Kevin. The intelligence was always there. It needed someone who assumed it existed.
