Character Analysis
An Andalusian shepherd who has already made one brave choice — refusing the priesthood his parents wanted — before the novel begins. His journey tests whether he can make the same choice again at every larger scale. Santiago is not exceptionally clever, brave, or gifted; he is exceptionally attentive and willing to begin. That willingness to begin, again and again, is the novel's portrait of heroism.
How They Speak
Plain, direct speech. No affectation. Asks straightforward questions. His language grows simpler as he grows wiser — complexity is replaced by clarity.
