Because Starr Carter is one of the most fully realized protagonists in contemporary fiction, and spending 444 pages inside her head will teach you more about code-switching, institutional racism, and the meaning of witness than a semester of lectures. And because it is genuinely funny, until it isn't, and the shift from one to the other is what reading is for.

Dense enough for serious literary analysis — diction, register, narrative structure, symbolism — while being immediately accessible to reluctant readers. The code-switching gives you weeks of language analysis. The THUG LIFE framework gives you weeks of structural/thematic work. The contemporary setting removes the distance that allows students to treat To Kill a Mockingbird as history rather than present. The pairing with Mockingbird, when Mockingbird is already in the curriculum, is the most pedagogically productive pairing in contemporary YA.
Why It Still Matters
The question of which version of yourself you perform for which audience is not a Black question — it is a human question. Starr's code-switching is the experience of every person who has ever modulated their accent for a job interview, suppressed their humor at a formal dinner, or chosen which version of their name to put on an application. The novel takes this universal human experience and shows what it costs when the stakes are not social comfort but physical survival.
