Because the maze is a perfect metaphor for every system you're trapped in without understanding — school, family, the economy, the country. Thomas wakes up inside a structure built by other people, with rules he didn't write, and has to figure out both how to survive it and whether he can change it. That's not a fantasy premise. That's Tuesday. And the novel asks, in a way that's impossible to dismiss because it's so kinetic and propulsive: what do you do when you discover the people running the system were using you?
For Teachers
The Maze Runner is one of the most teachable dystopian novels for middle-school level because the ethical questions — consent, sacrifice, institutional authority — are embedded in concrete plot events rather than abstract discourse. Students don't need context to feel the injustice; they feel it in the story and then you can provide the context. The memory/identity theme supports units on psychology, identity development, and the relationship between past and present self. The governance structure of the Glade is an excellent vehicle for civics discussion.
Why It Still Matters
The Glade is a managed community designed to produce useful data for its operators while its inhabitants believe they're just trying to survive. Replace 'WICKED' with any institution — school, government, corporation, social media platform — and the novel's central question becomes: do you consent to a system you were born into and don't remember choosing?
