Character Analysis

Kya is the novel's center of gravity — every chapter either follows her directly or converges on the question of what she has done. She is simultaneously the novel's most sympathetic and most opaque character: we are as close to her as third-person limited allows, and yet her inner life remains partly sealed. This is not a failure of characterization but a structural choice — Kya survived by not being legible to others, and that habit of concealment shapes how she exists even on the page.

How They Speak

Dialect in childhood; increasingly literary as she reads; scientific precision in naturalist work; poetry for emotions she cannot speak. Her language evolves with her education.
