About William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) wrote Julius Caesar in 1599, one of the first plays performed at the newly opened Globe Theatre. He was 35 years old and at the peak of his theatrical power. The Globe was a commercial enterprise — Shakespeare was a shareholder — and Julius Caesar was one of its inaugural productions. A visitor to London in September 1599, Thomas Platter, recorded seeing 'the tragedy of the first Emperor Julius Caesar' performed at the Globe by a company of fifteen actors. Shakespeare drew primarily on Thomas North's translation of Plutarch's Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans (1579) for the historical material.
