Character Analysis

An innkeeper's son who becomes, by accident and initiative, the central figure of a treasure expedition. Jim is defined by impulsive action — he acts before he plans, often to remarkable effect, always at personal risk. He is brave without being reckless, honest without being naive, and ends the novel damaged by his own success. His coming-of-age is not a simple growth from innocence to maturity but a discovery that the world is morally complicated and that surviving it leaves marks.

How They Speak

Clean standard English, slightly formal — the voice of a tradesman's son with aspirations. His narration sounds older than he is.
