For Students
Because the question the novel is really asking — how do you stay emotionally alive in a world that punishes you for it? — is not a Regency question. And because Austen is funnier than you have been told, sharper than the adaptations suggest, and genuinely angry in ways she has to hide between the lines. Reading her well means learning to hear the anger in the understatement.
For Teachers
The novel's binary structure makes it ideal for comparative analysis at every level — but the real value is in the way it resists the binary. Students who think Elinor is 'right' and Marianne is 'wrong' have not finished the novel. The argument about restraint versus feeling is genuinely open, which makes every essay about it productive and every re-reading generative.
Why It Still Matters
The pressure to hide what you feel so you don't seem 'too much' is not a Regency problem. Elinor's suffering in silence while Lucy Steele tells her about Edward is the experience of being professionally pleasant to someone who is actively hurting you. Marianne's inability to accept that the person she loved was performing is the experience of discovering that the relationship was not what you thought. Austen writes about the Regency; she means to describe us.
