Character Analysis

The novel's engine and its most formally complex character. Ifemelu is defined by her observational intelligence — she sees things clearly and cannot stop herself from saying what she sees. This is her gift (the blog, the fellowship, the clarity) and her wound (she observes herself into distance from the people she loves). Her three American relationships — coach, Curt, Blaine — chart her relationship to America's racial geography. Her return to Lagos is the novel's argument that authenticity is not a fixed state but something you have to keep choosing.

How They Speak

Three registers: Nigerian-English (home), performed American-English (early America), and eventually a hybrid that is consciously her own. The blog is a fourth register — public, rhetorical, aphoristic.
